LAB (Lightweight as a Bond)

Seminar

In the seminar "LAB - Lightweight as a Bond", the name is the concept: like a laboratory setup, the course examines design, structure and fabrication as one coherent whole, in theory and in practice. In solid construction, the focus often falls on the design first, while load transfer and fabrication are considered only afterwards. Lightweight structures are less forgiving: geometry, statics and craft have to be thought through from the outset. Students explore these relationships experimentally — working with textiles and cables as materials, and with Grasshopper, scissors, needle and thread as tools.

In the second half of the semester, these insights feed into a design assignment. It forms part of a nationwide competition, in the course of which one of the submitted designs is to be built at Textile Roofs in Berlin.
